You might be thinking…
Why should I do talk to you?
Here is the deal. If you are like many high school and college students, you are facing some big decisions about your future and you are feeling the pressure to make the right decisions.
You might feel unmotivated, uncertain, angry, frustrated, like you don’t care, ready to bail out. Or just crappy.
Things just aren't going the way you expected them to go.
You may have your parents adding to this pressure or you may just be putting it on yourself. But, you have to choose a school or major or a career…and it feels like a big deal to make this decision.
It will impact the rest of your life.
So, lets talk. It’s free. It’s 30 minutes.
What is the worst that will happen? You lose 30 minutes, think I am an idiot, and are no worse off than you are now. If you do not like it or me, you do not have to tell anyone we talked, ever. No one will know (unless you tell them).
What is the best that will happen? You start to figure out what you want and feel excited about it (or at least less crappy).
Is taking a 30 minute risk worth turning all that uncertainty and frustration into excitement about your life? What do you have to lose?
Here are some questions to ask yourself:
- Do I like my life now?
- Am I going to get what I want by doing what I am doing today?
- Is what is happening now what I expected it would be? (for example, you thought being at college would provide all the answers and clear up your confusion)
- Successful people take risks all the time, do I?
- Is my fear going to stop me from taking the kind of risk that is going to make me successful?
- Is not caring going to stop me from taking risks?
- Is being lazy going to stop me from taking risks?
- When is this going to start being easier?
- Do you care enough to do something?
How is one session going to help?
- You’ll get different ideas about what you can do (i.e. not the steps someone else wants you to be doing or you feel you “should” be doing)
- You’ll believe that you can get what you want
- Realizing that you are not the only person struggling with what to do with your life is helpful
- You will realize that you do not have to do it alone
You might still be thinking: this is stupid, I do not believe in counseling/therapy/coaching …whatever you call it.
I get it.
If you have read this far there is something you are looking for.
If you were an athlete and wanted to get better at your sport, what would you do?
- Option 1 – hope it happens
- Option 2 – work your ass off; go to the gym, workout, and be in excellent shape; practice as much as possible.
- Option 3 – get a coach who can guide your hard work, can help you learn the skills that you need to get better at your sport, who is an expert in how to train for your sport, and who can push you beyond what you think you are capable of.
Which option is going to help you get where you want to go?
Which option are you currently using to figure out what you want to do?
It may be stupid, you might not believe in counseling, etc., but are you happy? Do you know how to get where you want to go?
I do not care what it is called. I was in your shoes and I tried to do it alone, and here I am 20 years later realizing that I did not need to make it so hard for myself. If only I could have asked for some help, some guidance or leadership, from someone who was further along the path, I would have wasted a lot less time, energy, and money.
Here is the deal
